A Study on the Relationship among Self-Efficacy of Psychiatric Nurses, Job Stress and Burnout

Abstract
Purpose: This study focuses on the relationship among burnout, job stress and self-efficacy of psychiatric nurses. This descriptive correlational research intend to offer a base on programs to reduce and prevent burnout that psychiatric nurses frequently occur. Methods: Two hundred and thirty seven psychiatric nurses were recruited from April to May, 2011. The instruments were the Burnout measurement instrument, Job stress measurement instrument, Self-efficacy measurement instrument. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson`s correlation coefficient, and Scheffe`s test using the SPSS/WIN program. Results: The analytic results reveal that job stress and self-efficacy have influence on burnout of psychiatric nurses. Conclusion: These analytic results in our research indicate that ``burnout``, ``job stress`` and ``self-efficacy`` have the significant positive correlations; The higher job stress has, the higher burnout becomes, whereas the lower self-efficacy becomes. The higher self-efficacy has, the lower burnout becomes. High job stress and low self-efficacy aggravate burnout. Therefore, an effective strategy to improve self-efficacy and decrease job stress requires to reduce burnout of psychiatric nurses
